Popular Nigerian Musician D’banj Arrested for Alleged Fraud

Oladapo Oebanji, better known by his stage name D’banj, was arrested and detained. Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Crimes Commission (ICPC)according to the report.

On Tuesday, the artist was taken into custody when ICPC agents approached him and forced him to appear at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

D’banj avoided appearing for questioning over the fraud allegations for weeks, saying he was out of the country for a performance, according to sources close to the case.

Investigations show that D’banj and other corrupt government officials worked together to add fictitious “beneficiaries” to the scheme’s payroll. Once the money is paid to the recipient, it is tracked from the beneficiary’s bank account to the pop star’s name.

After ignoring repeated requests, the ICPC threatened to arrest the artist in Nigeria or elsewhere abroad if he did not appear for questioning on Tuesday.

D’banj was arrested after an extensive interrogation session upon arrival. Authorities denied the musician’s request for administrative bail, citing concerns that he would not appear in court if given his freedom.

On Wednesday, the ICPC could ask the court for time to investigate the musician before filing charges.
