Two-time Oscar-, Golden Globe-, and Grammy-winning songstar Irene Carla Escalera has died in Florida at the age of 63.
Best known for singing the title songs of the films Fame and Flashdance, singer and actress Carla appeared as the lead character Coco Hernandez in the 1980 release Fame.
Three years later Carla co-wrote flash dance … What a feeling for Flashdance, she won an Oscar for best original song and won two Grammys for original score in a movie and best female pop vocal performance.
Both songs were Top 10 hits in the UK and US. It was later re-recorded to appear in the 1997 film The Full Monty.

Cara was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress and won the gong from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), including her role in the 1982 film Sister Sister. She started out as a child actor and singer, and in the 1970s she appeared on Johnny She Carson’s show and jazz icon Duke She performed at her concerts in tribute to Ellington.
Her promoter Judith Moose announced the news in a statement posted on Cara’s official Twitter account on Saturday morning.

“She is a beautiful and talented soul whose legacy will live on forever through her music and films.”
Her cause of death has not yet been determined, but her family has requested privacy.
Moose adds: She became an icon for her 1980s music lovers and has inspired many of today’s most influential singers, including Mariah for Carrie and Whitney for her Houston. While we all mourn her passing, we celebrate her legacy…”
