A week ago I spent a lovely 24 hours in a beautiful hotel Brookdale Manor House in PearlOwned by the Rudd family, this former private home has been transformed into a boutique guesthouse. With breathtaking views of the Kleindrakenstein Mountains behind the house and the Pearl Valley in front, you arrive at a stunning location.
This is a world-class wineland retreat where a guest’s stay is completely bespoke. Veteran hoteliers Avonne Cotsy (General Manager) and Gary Cotsy (Executive Her Chef) have extensive hospitality experience and will coordinate your itinerary. I loved walking into the homely kitchen and being asked by Gary and his assistant Asriel, “What’s for dinner?” In Brookdale, you really feel at home.
Meals, wine tastings, leisure activities and other needs can be easily tailored to you. The manor house can accommodate 12 adults (and 2 of her children under the age of 12 sharing with their parents) and serves meals in his 5 bedrooms in the main building and the 6th bedroom in the adjoining building . I imagined how nice it would be to take over the entire house for a special celebration.
Our room was a luxurious haven with the most comfortable bed and feather pillows. There is a pillow menu if you prefer something different. Thanks to the blinds and curtains, the room is completely darkened at the push of a button, which for me is just heaven. I didn’t get the chance to watch TV from the screen that rose up from the box at the base of the bed, nor to enjoy the stocked minibar with tea and coffee stations.
The house is spacious with so many nooks and crannies to escape. There are two spacious lounges inside, as well as a library if you need a private room for work. Four additional terrace seating areas and a pool room next to the long black pool provide additional areas to relax.
Your dinner will be set in one of these spaces that offers complete privacy. In one of them, we enjoyed a delicious five-course meal by the fire. The food was unpretentious, exciting and all the delicious elements perfectly cooked. Chef Gary takes an ingredient-driven approach, looking for the best in the area. Brookdale has its own kitchen garden that inspires the menu.
It started with a delicious cup of delicious tomato water and parmesan cheese thuille, followed by homemade trout with beets, lime cream and crisp onions. Next up was roasted tandoori cauliflower with red onions, hummus and dukkah. In keeping with its North African themed flavor profile, the main was a Moroccan Spiced Lamb Cutlet with tomato fondue, dauphinoise potatoes and rum juice. Desserts include lime and nut nougat, lemongrass curd and passion fruit sorbet.
The British Rudd family acquired 67 hectares in 2015, recognizing the potential of overgrown and underutilized land. The wines are produced under the supervision of a talented young winemaker, Kiara Scott.
We tasted a range of their wines in the Brookdale and Mason Road ranges which have already started winning awards. We tasted a range of Chenin Blanc, Serendipity Rosé, Syrah, and a flagship Chenin Blanc that sold out of older vintages. Throughout October, Brookdale partnered with her Getwine to raise breast cancer awareness. project flamingoYou can read all about it here.
Guests can relax in privacy, soak up the tranquil atmosphere, or explore the natural beauty of the grounds and surroundings. Pearl Winelands – The nation’s most award-winning wine, cuisine and wellness experiences are just steps away. The area also offers access to some of the Western Cape’s best nature trails, excellent golf, and interesting cultural and historical monuments.
Breakfast was hearty and plentiful with fresh fruit, homemade muesli, yoghurt and pastries, followed by warm egg dishes like benedict and shakshuka.
Adjacent to the cellar and wine tasting room, we look forward to the new 80-seat restaurant scheduled to open later this year or early 2023.
I highly recommend Brookdale Manor House, arriving as a stranger and leaving as a friend. The service is incredibly warm and efficient and the accommodations are excellent. Staying at this gem is the best Pearl has to offer.
I’ve added some images below because it was so nice to have the setup end up here.
