Tracy Rose A child born in Durban in 1974, a product of the apartheid era in South Africa. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Wits College and started her career as an Artist in Her Residence at her SA Her National Gallery in Cape Town.
She currently lives and works in Johannesburg, and has been a national performer at the Venice Biennale three times (2001 and 2007) and most recently at the 58th in 2019 as part of SA’s stand ‘The Stronger We Become’. represents the
Rose is unabashed and shy about using her body to speak out. Described as her provocateur, she certainly shocks, informs, shakes her perceptions and often places herself at the center of art. Her inclusion includes filming herself and her subjects naked, shaving her body hair during her performances, and making her own films of herself boxing naked. That’s it.
An artist whose work is multi-layered and complex, she seeks to specifically comment on and document femininity and femininity, gender and race, and the objectification of children. Her work is informed and permeated by a combination of an insatiable curiosity for information and her own personal experience.
