The Mother City

Jarrett Erasmus

(Johannesburg)

“Mother City” is the nickname given to Cape Town, South Africa. A city plagued by apartheid space planning, with many unresolved socio-political issues, completely ignored by the city’s governing body.

This work seeks to resonate with the underlying anger at the growing imbalance between the city and its communities. It also seeks to reflect the violence that has occurred to these inhabitants through the lack of work opportunities, in addition to the many inhumane practices inherited from the apartheid system. The apartheid system, which is still favored in this cityscape, is superior to anywhere else in the country.
