Also known as Ethiopian beef tive, Awazetive is a popular East African beef dish that combines a variety of ingredients to create savory and delicious dishes. In Ethiopia, chib refers to a cube or sliced beef or lamb dish.
Awaze sauce is a spicy sauce or paste made using Ethiopian ethnic spices. When cooked together, you’ll be in a hurry to create an amazing dish that you won’t forget.

- beef: This recipe uses 1.5 lbs of beef cut into 1 inch cubes. You can use chunks of meat or bite-sized beef. I usually get mine from local grocery stores and meat markets.

How to make fluffy sauce
In a small bowl, add all the spices in the Awaze sauce. Add water and olive oil and mix until pasty. Alternatively, it can be blended using a food processor.
How to make Ethiopian beef tive
- Add olive oil to a large frying pan, heat and add chopped beef. You can also use a 12-inch cast iron pot. Add salt and peppercorn and stir on high heat for a few minutes until browned.
- Melt Niteru Kibbe (clarified butter from Ethiopia) in a frying pan and add chopped onions and chopped garlic. Fry for a few minutes and add the sliced jalapeno pepper.
- Add Awaze sauce, simmer on medium heat for 5 minutes, and add brown beef.
- Enjoy with lemon juice and coriander!

I’m on a low carb diet, so I eat beef with keto bread or on a bed of cauliflower rice.

- After putting the beef in a heavy saucepan, wait for the bottom of each part to turn brown before turning it over on the second side.
- Make the beef into a single layer without crowding the frying pan and brown it properly.
- If you don’t have the flavorful spice butter (or Niteru Kibbe), you can use unsalted butter instead. 1-2 teaspoons of oil is sufficient. You may need to add a little more spice to taste.
- Cook the beef more or less, depending on how you like it.
- If the awaze sauce is a little watery, add berbere.
Recipe variation
- Season the beef with kosher salt and black pepper, then brown it to make it soft and juicy.
- If necessary, use your favorite beef cut or replace it with lamb meat.
- Add Ethiopian collard greens, fresh rosemary, or peppers to make a nice variety.
