LEMONGRASS SYRUP RECIPE – Afrolems Nigerian Food Blog

Lemongrass syrup is what I often use for pancakes, puff puffs, drink mixes and more. It is so versatile that it can also be used for ice cream. There are a lot of ingredients growing here in Nigeria, but I don’t think I’m using them. How many lemongrass products do you have on your store shelves, even though you are using them? To be fair, Nigerians usually do not commit to ingredients if there are not many use cases or if there are no significant health benefits. With this in mind, I have listed some of the health benefits of lemongrass that you may not be aware of.

Benefits of lemongrass

  • Lemongrass has several antioxidant properties.
  • It also has some antibacterial properties, which means it fights bacteria, especially in the mouth.
  • Lemongrass promotes healthy digestion, especially when taken as tea.
  • It is also a great diuretic that means you urinate often enough when you drink lemongrass tea.

I would like to emphasize that the method of consuming lemongrass is also important for achieving these characteristics. I don’t know how many of the above properties are effective for lemongrass syrup. I used it primarily because of the scented nature of the plant, but it can be consumed in other ways.

Lemongrass syrup recipe

material

A handful of lemongrass

2 glasses of water

1 cup of granulated sugar

Method

Rinse the lemongrass until all sand and impurities are completely removed.

Put lemongrass and water in a pan and simmer on medium heat for 5-7 minutes.

Turn off the heat and soak for 15 minutes.

When it boils, there should be about a glass of lemongrass liquid left. Therefore, weigh the liquid of lemongrass with an equal amount of sugar and bring it to a boil.

Stir and bring to a boil until the sugar is completely dissolved and the liquid is thick.

Let it cool, then bottle it and put it in the refrigerator. It can be used for pancakes, puff puffs, and ice cream.

Note: Lemongrass can be left in the liquid for one day and taken out the next day to maximize the flavor. However, remove it after 24 hours so that the syrup does not become bitter.
